The Ratio Tip For Setting Your French Press Coffee Up For Success
By Tom Maxwell
French pressing is one of the easiest ways to brew coffee since you can easily control the type of coffee, the length of the steep, and the brew strength.
The first rule of the French press is to know the standard coffee-to-water ratio. Start with one part ground beans to 12 parts water, or one tablespoon of coffee per cup of water.
Ratios are scaleable to the amount of coffee you want to brew and how strong you like it, as the strength is affected by a higher coffee-to-water ratio.
You can use pre-ground coffee or grind it fresh using a medium-coarse setting. This grind size is large enough for optimal extraction yet not so small as to clog the filter.
Add your coffee to your French press and heat your water. If you only have a kettle, you can boil it, but if you can control the temperature, set it to 200 F or just below boiling.
