The Pumpkin Pie Hack That Saves You The Fuss Of Making Separate Crust
By Cristine Struble
If you love baking pumpkin pie but fear a poorly executed crust, this self-crusting pumpkin pie hack is the perfect solution. It's easy to make and tastier than a pre-made crust.
Pour a cake-like batter into the base of the pie dish. After it settles, slowly pour the pumpkin pie filling into the center so the remaining batter folds around the edges.
As the pie bakes, the base surrounds the pumpkin custard, creating a crust. Since they bake simultaneously, there is consistency in the process that helps reduce execution errors.
If you want to skip the crust altogether, add ½ cup flour or Bisquik to the filling to create an edge as it bakes in the pie dish for a self-crusting pie.
Although recipes vary, this addition changes the consistency and creates a firmer texture. This hack is less pie-like and more cakey or bready, but it does simplify the process.
A graham cracker crust may be the easiest pie crust to master. By simply combining crushed graham crackers, butter, and sugar, the mixture bakes quickly with little error.
