The Origin Of French Tacos, One Of France's Fast Food Favorites
By Kaliga Rice
French tacos typically feature Halal meat and French fries and are topped with various types of cheese, including shredded cheese, melted cheese, a cheese sauce made from crème fraîche, and Gruyère cheese. While the dish’s growing popularity can easily be justified by its description, its origin is challenging to pinpoint.
There are several different stories about the dish’s creation, but most people agree that French tacos originated in Rhône-Alpes, France, between the late 1990s and early 2000s. The New Yorker reports that the creators of the French taco were likely the owners of a snack, an independent restaurant in France that specializes in takeout cuisine.
Additionally, many assume the creators of the tacos were of North African heritage, as they resemble a North African dish called mukhala'a. If you’re now intrigued to make some French tacos, ensure you use large flour tortillas, and stuff them with lots of food, experimenting with the meat however you see fit.
