The Milk Bar Layer Cake Inspired By Ina Garten
By Carly Weaver
Milk Bar cakes share some signature qualities, as they typically have three tiers of cake, frosting, and other goodies assembled without an outer covering of icing. In a 2022 TODAY segment of "Ina's Holiday Table," Milk Bar's Christina Tosi created one such towering holiday masterpiece to honor celebrity chef Ina Garten, and the duo shared a sweet moment on screen.
On the show, Christina Tosi said she's "a really big flavor story person," and she wanted to bring Ina Garten's flavor story to a layered vanilla mint chip cake. In honor of one of Garten's favorite flavors, vanilla, Tosi used a sheet-pan vanilla cake soaked in vanilla mint-flavored milk as the first layer.
Tosi used a slightly underbaked cheesecake as the second layer and then added a salty layer of pretzel crumbs to compliment the sweetness. Finally, a mint chip butter-based frosting made with mint and chocolate served as a nod to holiday flavors, completing the Ina Garten Holiday Special flavor story, which Tosi described as, "Mint and vanilla with a little salty-sweet moment."
