The Meat Switch McDonald's Made To 'Improve' Its McNuggets
By C.A. Pinkham
Created by chef Reme Arend in 1983, McNuggets quickly became an iconic menu option. The recipe has evolved over time, notably in 2003 when dark meat was eliminated.
White and dark meat are very different in taste and texture, with white meat being leaner and drier, while dark meat is fattier and juicer.
Until 2003, half of each McNuggets container consisted of dark meat chicken while the other half was white meat. It seems like McDonald's bowed to public pressure for the change.
In the 1990s and early 2000s, many nutritionists believed white meat was healthier since it contains fewer calories and fat, but this has since been debunked.
We now know that the difference in calories is negligible, and the fat content in dark meat actually makes it healthier than white meat.
Many people still aren't happy about the change, and some even started petitions to switch back to dark meat. McNugget lovers are hoping the chain brings back dark meat for good.
