The Majority Of The World's Potatoes Come From This Country
By C.A. Pinkham
Americans love potatoes, which is why it's easy to think that the United States is the largest producer of potatoes, but the truth is, it isn't even in the top three.
The top two producers worldwide are the world's two most populous cultures, China and India, and the third is a country that you've seen in the news a lot lately: Ukraine.
China trades off with India as the most populous country in the world, so although Chinese culture isn't considered potato-heavy, it's no surprise that China's the top producer.
Potatoes are eaten far more commonly in China than you might think, and potatoes became a staple crop in China around 400 years ago, right after Europeans got their hands on them.
Different regions in China also have different methods of preparing potatoes. The country produces roughly 94 million metric tons per year as of 2021.
