The Kerrygold Irish Cheddar Cheese Copycat You Can Find At Aldi
By Alli Neal
Kerrygold is an Irish dairy brand known for its rich and creamy products. The budget-friendly supermarket Aldi has a private-label cheese that rivals Kerrygold Irish cheddar.
The Aldi Emporium line offers assorted mature Irish cheeses that vary in levels of agedness and sharpness, offering a creamy "Mild," a sharper "Mature," and a stronger "Vintage."
Aldi's cheese is produced and imported from Ireland, with milk from Irish grass-fed cows. If you enjoy Kerrygold's Irish cheddar, this line fits the bill.
Former cheesemonger Meredith Bethune says it's her favorite non-brand-name alternative and describes it as having the piquancy of English cheddar and an American butteriness.
The Mild cheddar is smooth and creamy, just like Kerrygold's Dubliner (which technically isn't classified as a cheddar). The Mature cheese is harder, sharper, and more crumbly.
Kerrygold's aged cheddar is aged for a year, while its Reserve is aged for two. It's unknown how long Aldi's Vintage cheddar is aged, but it's the sharpest and most crumbly.
While Ornua Foods, Kerrygold's producer, has a private label for "a wide selection of retailers," according to its website, it's unconfirmed if it manufactures Aldi's cheddar.
