The Grilled Cheese Hack You Can Even Use In A Hotel Room
By Linda Larsen
Cravings for grilled cheese sandwiches can hit anytime, anywhere — even when you’re a student living without a kitchen or a traveler spending your days at a hotel. Luckily, there’s a foolproof method for making grilled cheese that requires nothing but the ingredients, some foil, and an iron — a common appliance every hotel room provides.
The even heat from the iron is ideal for grilling, and the iron itself is perfect for pressing down on the sandwich, which is the key to fusing the cheese and bread together. Before you get to the ironing part, spread softened butter or mayonnaise on the outside of your assembled sandwich, wrap it in foil, and seal the package to avoid getting cheese stuck to your iron.
Then, set the iron to the hottest setting, turn the steam option off, and put the foil packet on the ironing board. Using the iron, press down evenly on each side of the sandwich for about five to seven minutes, turning the sandwich packet over once or twice — but don’t press down too hard, or the cheese will escape and make a mess.
