The Fruits And Veggies You Should Avoid Storing Near Your Potatoes
By Tom Maxwell
Some fruits and vegetables emit ethylene, a gas that promotes ripening. If your potatoes are stored close to them, they may think it's sprouting season and begin to grow roots.
To prevent sprouting, avoid storing your potatoes with ethylene-producing produce like bananas, avocados, cantaloupe, peaches, pears, tomatoes, and peppers.
While potatoes aren't as sensitive to ethylene as other produce is, proximity to the gas will definitely encourage sprouting, and can eventually even cause spoilage.
Beyond keeping potatoes stored away from any ethylene-producing factories, store them in a place that is cool, dry, and ventilated, such as your basement or pantry.
If one potato begins to sprout, keep it away from the rest of the bunch, as it may signal to the others that it's time for them to sprout, as well.
