The Costco Section Julia Child Couldn't Stay Away From
By Elizabeth Pak
The late celebrity chef Julia Child may be known for her easy-to-follow recipes for extravagant meals, but she also knew how to save a buck when shopping for ingredients. Child reportedly made routine visits to Costco for bulk items, and one particular aisle was her all-time favorite.
Child, whose most famous dish is a French beef stew called beef bourguignon, often ended her trip to Costco with a hot dog from the snack stand. With her love of hot dogs and beef stew in mind, it should be no surprise that Child adored Costco's meat department.
In an interview with Lucky Peach, singer Barbara Fairchild recalled Child saying that Costco had the best meat selection to choose from. Fairchild said, "She was particularly enthusiastic about the steaks — they were the ones she would always use if she was entertaining."
