The Bold Ingredient That Will Totally Upgrade Your Mashed Potatoes
By Allison Lindsey
It's not uncommon to wind up with a boring batch of mashed potatoes. Although it's not a common pairing, adding horseradish to your favorite recipe breaks the monotony.
Horseradish is a root vegetable within the mustard family that imparts a strong, pungent essence and zesty, sharp taste without compromising the potatoes' creaminess.
Horseradish pairs well with a wide range of meats, vegetables, and seasonings, so there are plenty of ways to include it in your mashed potatoes.
Minced horseradish is sold jarred and includes salt and vinegar to make it more palatable. This option is convenient, as you can simply add it to your potatoes as you mash them.
If you don't want the pickled, vinegary taste of jarred horseradish, fresh is the way to go. Fresh horseradish needs to be peeled, grated, and seasoned.
Hot horseradish is also spicy and bold, adding a fiery dimension to mashed potatoes without turning off picky eaters.
