The Blue-Green Banana That Tastes Like
Ice Cream
By Nico Danilovich
Not all bananas are yellow in color and mildly sweet in taste; their looks can vary — for instance, there’s the red banana, with a color that isn’t hard to guess and a taste that is rich and creamy. In fact, if you want a banana that tastes like ice cream and is the hue of the sky, then you have to get your hands on the blue java banana.
With a smooth texture and a hint of vanilla, the blue java banana’s flesh reminds people of none other than vanilla ice cream, which is why it's also called the ice cream banana. Javas work well in both savory and sweet recipes, and it goes without saying they're great with ice cream. Flambées, fried rice, and smoothies in particular benefit from their inclusion, too.
Edelle Schlegel, one cultivator of the java banana, told USA Today the taste is "sweet and slightly tart like apple bananas, the texture is ultra creamy." In terms of its actual color, Snopes has pointed out that many of the vibrant pictures of java bananas on the internet have been secretly altered, but rest assured that they do look blue-green at times.
