The 2 Plate Rules You Should Follow At Fine Dining Restaurants
By Julia Mullaney
Keeping up with all of the proper mannerisms expected at fine dining establishments can be confusing or even daunting, as it may be out of your comfort zone when it comes to culinary experiences. However, you should know these two plate rules, and it’s all about what’s on your plate — and where.
Although diving into your meal as soon as it reaches the table might be tempting, the first rule is: do not do that. Etiquette expert Myka Meier says that rather than eating every last crumb, you should leave a bite of food on the plate to signal that your meal was delicious, but you've eaten enough.
Meir also said, "The upper left part of your plate is for discards," suggesting that you should push garnishes like lemon rind not meant for consumption to that part of the plate. In contrast, she says sauces and butter belong on the bottom right of your dish.
Of course, there are other rules about what to wear, how to behave, and keeping personal items off the table. Interestingly, when it comes to taking photos of your food, etiquette expert Patricia Napier-Fitzpatrick comments, "If it's not distracting other restaurant patrons and you can do it discreetly, I would say it's okay."
