Soy Sauce Popcorn Will Make You Forget Movie Theatre Butter Altogether
By Chase Shustack
Your average popcorn doesn't taste the same as the movie theatre popcorn, due to that “movie theatre butter” flavoring. While recipes for making movie theatre butter at home do exist, there's one condiment that you probably use with your seafood or beef that may make a better fit for your bowl of popcorn: Soy sauce.
Soy sauce naturally has a salty and savory flavor profile to it and a subtly sweet (almost bitter) aftertaste, which pairs well with the creaminess of the butter. A good way to try soy sauce on popcorn is to mix your popcorn with butter first, then drizzle the soy sauce over the top, which will help you get accustomed to the taste without being overwhelming.
If you want to take it a step further, try adding other spices and seasonings to your butter and soy sauce mixture like sriracha, pepper flakes, or black pepper. If you think your popcorn should be more savory, you can add garlic or onion powder to the butter — feel free to experiment and get creative.
