Savannah Smiles: The Origin Of The Discontinued Girl Scout Cookie

It's safe to say that some fans of Girl Scout cookies were disappointed in 2020 to find that Savannah Smiles was no longer on the order form.
These lemon shortbread cookies dusted with powdered sugar had a decent run from 2011 to 2019. They were a reinvention of the Lemon Cooler cookie, sold from 2003 to 2006.
The cookie was named after Savannah, Georgia — the city where Girl Scouts began and founder Juliette Gordon Low was born.
The “smiles” part of the name comes from the classic Brownie/Girl Scout Smiles song (“I've got something in my pocket, it belongs across my face…”).
Savannah Smiles cookies come from a long line of lemon-flavored cookies that date back to the ‘80s. The first lemon-flavored cookie was Juliettes, which ran from 1984 to 1985.
There were also Cabana Cremes, Chalet Cremes, and Lemon Drops. Another lemon cookie eventually replaced the Savannah Smiles — the “vastly inferior” Lemon Ups.
