Making Retro
Hors D'oeuvre
Cheese Balls

Cheese balls are still popular appetizers for dinner parties because they are extremely versatile and can accommodate a vast array of mix-ins depending on what specific flavor profile you're after. Food Network’s Ree Drummond believes this retro appetizer is a fan favorite due to one key ingredient.
Whether you're making one of the iconic recipes from the 1970s, or The Pioneer Woman's cranberry-pecan cheese ball, Drummond considers cream cheese a must. In the second episode of Season 24 of “The Pioneer Woman,” Drummond states “any kind of cheese ball has a cream cheese base, then you can have some fun with the other cheeses you want to add.”
For example, in Season 11, Episode 30, of her popular Food Network show, Drummond showcases over six different kinds of cheese and how to use them in some of her most popular recipes. You could attempt Drummond's classic Christmas tree cheese ball, or one of her more complex cheese ball recipes, but cream cheese is always a must.
