Rachael Ray's Secret To Delicious Savory French Toast
By Cynthia Anaya
The thought of French toast may immediately evoke the image of powdered sugar and whipped cream or syrup and fresh fruit toppings, but the popular food can have a savory flavor too. Celebrity chef Rachael Ray shared her savory French toast recipe on her show, and the delicious meal can be whipped up in under 30 minutes.
Ray provides the recipe online for four servings and labels the creation a "BLD meal," so you can enjoy it for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. To start, she cuts day-old Italian bread into one-inch-thick slices and then prepares a savory custard by whisking some cream and freshly grated Parmesan cheese with salt, sugar, cinnamon, and freshly grated nutmeg.
After coating both sides of the bread with the custard and cooking them until they're golden brown, Ray drizzles the French toast with warm honey and tops it off with strawberries dipped in balsamic vinegar and topped with basil leaves. To say the least, the meal is a perfect sweet and salty combo that you probably never expected to have with French toast.
