Plastic Bags Are Actually The Key To Salad Greens Staying Fresh
By C.A. Pinkham
Soggy salad greens are inevitable, but one simple way to keep them fresh for longer is by sealing them in an airtight plastic bag.
Ziploc bags may not be perfectly airtight, but they will keep oxygen out far more efficiently than a prepackaged container that's been opened.
You should also blow a big puff of air into the bag before you seal it so the carbon dioxide from your breath can help keep the greens fresher for longer.
In addition, when separating greens into plastic bags, add one (or even two) folded paper towels to the mix. Space them out within the greens for the best effect.
The paper towels act as a sponge for moisture within the lettuce, wicking the excess and keeping it from causing the greens to spoil.
