One Canned Cheese Unexpectedly Has A Cult Following
By Stacie Adams
Cougar Gold is a canned cheese product of Washington State University, developed by dairy professor Norman Golding. Fans go wild for the cheese, but most aren’t aware it exists.
Cougar Gold was originally made to last longer on shelves. It has a lactic acid culture called WSU 19, which reduces the release of carbon dioxide, preventing cans from exploding.
The cheese can be stored indefinitely when refrigerated and unopened. It has distinct qualities with nutty notes, a creamy texture, and subtly sweet milkiness.
Cougar Gold sells out yearly, especially during the seasonal rush — in some instances, up to 3,000 cans are sold in a day. Students are an integral part of the production process.
In addition to Cougar Gold, you can also get Smoky Cheddar, Dill Garlic, and many other flavors. Each 30-ounce can runs $33, and fans say it’s more than worth it.
