Meatloaf Is The Solution For Beef Wellington On A Budget
By Kalea Martin
Beef Wellington can come at a hefty price point, as it typically calls for beef tenderloin. However, TV personality Chrissy Teigen shares a cheaper alternative in her cookbook.
In Teigen's "Cravings: All Together," she substitutes meatloaf for beef tenderloin. While you generally pay $20 to $30 per pound of beef tenderloin, ground beef is only $5 to $6.
In addition to being cheaper, meatloaf is easier to work with. Beef tenderloin has a tedious cooking process involving multiple steps, whereas meatloaf doesn't.
All you have to do is make meatloaf like you normally would, assemble your Wellington, and put it in the oven. While meatloaf is much cheaper, it alters the taste and texture.
Beef tenderloin relies on ingredients like mustard and foie gras to give it flavor. Pairing the meatloaf with these ingredients will make it more similar to the traditional dish.
You can also be creative with meatloaf flavoring, like Teigen, who uses Thanksgiving stuffing mix instead of breadcrumbs to make the meatloaf even juicer.
