Keep Iceberg Lettuce Crisp Forever With One Storage Tip
By Kalea Martin
There's no denying that iceberg lettuce adds a superior, refreshing crunch to a salad or sandwich, but its leaves can easily turn limp if you fail to store it properly.
You might think the best way to maintain the crispness of iceberg lettuce is to store it in a dry, airtight container. Ideally, it should have good airflow and a bit of moisture.
Simply keep the lettuce in its bag and wrap the head with paper towels. Remove any wilted leaves and store the head in the crisper drawer to stay fresh and crisp for up to 10 days.
Like any other vegetable, lettuce wilts as a result of its plant cells deflating. This occurs when they aren't hydrated enough, but also when exposed to too much water.
Paper towels absorb any excess moisture that may be left over from washing the lettuce, creating a humid storage environment rather than a soggy or dry one.
Chopped or shredded iceberg lettuce stays crisp and fresh when stored in a plastic bag with a paper towel. You can also skip the plastic bag and wrap it in a kitchen towel.
