Is There Still A Chicken Wing Shortage In 2023?
By Haldan Kirsch
The National Chicken Council reports a projected 1.4 billion chicken wings or more were consumed in America during the 2023 Super Bowl, which is surprising, considering there has been a shortage of chicken wings recently that has caused prices to soar. There just might be hope on the horizon as chicken prices seem to return to normal.
The chicken wing industry was still feeling the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2022, and Texas and other parts of the South also saw an unseasonable winter storm that killed many chickens. This caused the average price of chicken to rise from $1.53 per pound to $1.80, and some dining establishments cited their prices rising by 100% from where they were in 2021.
As of mid-February, the price of chicken wings is reportedly down by 22%, which is a positive sign that things are moving in the right direction. However, this might not see the return of lower prices on chicken wings at your local sports bar, as the costs for other items like oil, sauces, and dips are still high, if not on the rise.
