Is There A Difference Between Cabbage Salad And Coleslaw?
By Deverone Gillespie and Max Smith-Ducati
Cabbage salad and coleslaw may look similar at first glance since the main components of both dishes are the same, but there are a few important distinctions between them.
The biggest difference between these salads is the dressing. Cabbage salad typically has a light vinaigrette made with oil, while coleslaw typically has a heavier, creamy dressing.
While cabbage salad often consists only of seasoned and dressed cabbage, coleslaw can include a few other ingredients like shredded veggies, fruits, or seasonings for variety.
Cabbage salad dressing starts with oil and can be flavored with additions like lemon juice, salt, or honey. This salad can be served on its own or as a condiment to other dishes.
Coleslaw dressing is typically mayonnaise-based, but plain Greek yogurt or sour cream can provide a similar consistency. This base is then thinned out with some vinegar.
The creaminess of the mayonnaise-based coleslaw makes it the perfect companion to contrast the saltiness of savory dishes like pulled pork sandwiches or hamburgers.
