Is It Safe To Put Open Canned Food In The Refrigerator?
By Allie Ward
Critics say storing an open can of food in the fridge can be problematic regarding food safety and quality, but the facts don't necessarily support that argument.
Many believe that chemicals from the can contaminate food with Bisphenol-A (BPA). However, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration maintains that any BPA present in cans is safe.
There is also the possibility that acidic food could trigger a chemical reaction, breaking down the inside of the can and dissolving some of the metal.
However, according to the USDA, these foods typically have a shorter shelf life than their low-acidity counterparts, and that corrosive effect can take years.
Regarding unused canned food, the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service encourages consumers to "place the unused portion in a glass or plastic storage container."
If refrigerating a can, the agency also advises covering it with some sort of lid and ensuring to eat the food within four days to ensure optimum quality and flavor.
