Ina Garten's Simple Way To Add Cheesy Crunch To Your Soup
By Heidi Chaya
Soup is a liquid-based dish, but to add textural variation and elevate its humble presentation, a crunchy topping is the perfect inclusion. There’s a form of bready soup topping that's beloved by Ina Garten, whose hack will make all your soup dreams come true.
The Williams Sonoma Instagram page showcases Garten’s Easy Tomato Soup with Grilled Cheese Croutons, which gently deconstructs the classic grilled cheese and tomato soup pairing, using croutons for dipping. Each bite is crispy, cheesy, and creamy all at once, with the nutty flavor of Gruyere cheese, savory San Marzano tomatoes, and a hint of saffron.
Garten’s basic crouton recipe can be used for a wide variety of applications, and to make her grilled cheese croutons, Garten brushes stale bread or buns with butter before grilling them on a panini press. This hack will put yesterday's bread to work today in a crunchy and creamy pairing that would make the Barefoot Contessa proud.
