Ina Garten Can't Stop Using These Canned Tomatoes
By Chris Day
Ina Garten, who is the host of Food Network’s “Barefoot Contessa,” is well-respected in the culinary community for her TV presence and her accolades. Like many chefs, she has certain ingredients she prefers above all others, and there is one kind of tomato that she swears by.
The Barefoot Contessa only uses San Marzano tomatoes, a cousin of the Roma tomato, which are known for having fewer seeds, a mellower flavor, and less acidity than other tomatoes. Per Insider, Garten believes that "A canned tomato is not that interesting," but notes that the San Marzano tomato is the exception.
The flavor and attributes of San Marzano tomatoes are the same whether they're grown in Italy, California, or even in your own home garden. Ina Garten’s online shop sells San Marzano tomatoes which are not of Italian origin, which means they are more affordable.
