How To Roll Out Baked Goods Sans Rolling Pin
By Megan Anderson
If you only bake a few times a year, you might not have a rolling pin on hand. Luckily, there’s a simple trick for rolling out baked goods without one — just use a wine bottle.
This tip comes from chef Ed Brown, and you can use a full or empty bottle, depending on what you have on hand.
A full bottle will provide more weight, but an empty one may be easier to control. Don't use an opened wine bottle with a stopper or cap screwed back on, though, as it could spill.
Choose a wine bottle with a relatively even shape, rather than one with sides that get wider as they go down. Be sure to clean the exterior thoroughly to avoid contamination.
If you don't have a rolling pin or a wine bottle on hand, it may be more cost-effective to buy the bottle, as you can drink the wine later but may not use a rolling pin again soon.
