How To Customize Crisper Drawer Settings To Get The Most Out Of Produce
By Betsy Parks
The crisper drawer in your fridge is the best place to keep your lettuce, fruits, and other veggies to prevent them from wilting and turning brown quickly.
However, in order to get the most out of your crisper drawer, you should familiarize yourself with its settings, which will allow you to control its humidity and airflow.
Set one of the drawers to high humidity, which will help thin-skinned fruits and vegetables prone to wilting stay fresh longer, like lettuce, asparagus, summer squash, and kale.
You can also store anything in the high-humidity drawer that’s sensitive to ethylene gas, such as asparagus, broccoli, cauliflower, cucumbers, strawberries, and fresh herbs.
Thicker-skinned produce like apples, stone fruit, and honeydew should be placed in the low-humidity drawer as they emit a lot of ethylene, making them ripen faster.
The extra airflow blows the gas away and keeps the produce fresher for longer. Keep your drawers about two-thirds full, and line them with paper towels to absorb excess moisture.
