How The National Portrait Gallery Is Honoring Chef José Andrés
By Elaina Friedman
Celebrity chef José Andrés has been spending much of his time on the ground with World Central Kitchen (WCK), his emergency relief organization that's provided millions of meals to people in war-stricken Ukraine, as well as meals to people affected by Hurricane Ian in Florida. Now, the National Portrait Gallery is honoring Andrés for his philanthropy.
The halls of the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C., are lined with renderings of people who have made their mark on the Nation's history, and the Gallery is now honoring José Andrés as one of its 2022 Portrait of a Nation honorees. The oil-on-linen portrait has been on view since November 10 alongside those of other newly minted honorees.
The portrait "José Andrés and the Olla de Barro that Feeds the World" comes after 9 months of work by LA-based painter Kadir Nelson and depicts Andrés holding a clay pot filled with stew in the foreground of a flood with a drove of WCK volunteers behind him. Other 2022 honorees are Clive Davis, Ava DuVernay, Marian Wright Edelman, Dr. Anthony Fauci, and Serena and Venus Williams.
