Hawaiian macaroni salad is the type you most often see on picnic tables. While the veggies in it may vary, the most important parts are the macaroni and the mayonnaise.
According to traditionalists, it’s Hellmann’s mayonnaise (called Best Foods mayonnaise in some regions of the U.S.) that must be used in Hawaiian macaroni salad.
Many of us cook our pasta al dente, but when it comes to Hawaiian mac salad, the macaroni is almost overcooked, leaving a soft noodle that easily gives way when you bite it.
There are variations of opinion on what is and isn’t allowed in a Hawaiian mac salad. Many Hawaiians won’t use ingredients like vinegar, while others enjoy including it.
