Here's How To Thicken Mashed Potatoes Without An Actual Thickener
By Kuamel Stewart
If you have a batch of runny mashed potatoes and have run out of flour, cornstarch, or potato starch, don't panic because there are other ways to thicken it.
The first option is to simply mix some potato flakes into your cooking pot until your mash thickens up, or you can condense the runny tubers on the stove.
Just remove the cover of your cooking pot as the heat from the stove starts to evaporate all of that extra liquid, resulting in a thicker consistency.
It's best to stay and watch your boiling, uncovered mashed potatoes thicken. The extra moisture vaporizes, but you don't want them to overcook and develop a gluey texture.
Instant mashed potatoes offer the convenience of thickening your runny spuds in a quick and easy process that won't affect the final taste of your dish.
Make sure your pot's temperature isn't very high, and then add a spoonful of flakes until the spuds become light and creamy.
