Here's How Many Beers You'd Have To Drink To Equal A Bottle Of Wine

Different types of alcohol offer different levels of potency. For instance, beer typically has a lower alcohol by volume (ABV) compared to most wines, meaning it's less potent.
An average bottle of beer has an ABV of about 5% and is usually 12 ounces. Comparatively, an average bottle of wine typically has 12% ABV and usually contains 25 ounces.
Given that wine is typically served in a 5-ounce glass, five 12-ounce beers with an ABV of 5% will roughly equal the strength of one bottle of wine with an ABV of 12%.
Certain types of sparkling wine, like prosecco, have an ABV below 12%. Accordingly, a lower number of 5% beers would equal one bottle of low-voltage, carbonated wine.
White wines can have relatively low ABVs, but varieties like chardonnay can be as high as 14.5%. Fortified wines can have over 14.5% due to added higher-proof, distilled spirits.
As a result, you would need to drink a greater number of 5% ABV beers to equal one bottle of high-potency wine unless the brew you're drinking is also quite potent.
Standard IPAs usually have an ABV ranging from 6% to 7%, but double and triple versions can have over 12%. The 120 Minute IPA from Dogfish Head Brewery ranges from 15% to 20% ABV.
