Gail Simmons Knows The Best Way To Make An Espresso Martini
By Chris Day
You wouldn't expect anything less than perfection from Gail Simmons, who has been a judge on Bravo TV's “Top Chef” since it first aired in 2006. The TV personality was also a special projects director with Food & Wine for 15 years, so with her background and experience, you'll want to pay attention to her advice on the best way to make espresso martinis.
Simmons’ recipe is simple but delivers on taste and presentation: She insists on using Absolut Vodka and adds Kahlúa to elevate the coffee flavor, but isn’t fussy about the espresso brand. She shakes the cocktail until it creates a “velvety foam,” strains the ice from getting in the glass, and garnishes it with peppermint candies or orange rinds.
Coffee cocktails are nothing new; they went viral on TikTok in 2021, with creators sharing their most innovative concoctions, such as Carajillos and Coffee Mojitos. Brunch items pair well with an espresso martini, so consider coffee cake, nutty biscotti, or a decadent tiramisu, or follow Simmons' suggestion of banana pancakes or fresh fruit.
