For The Ideal Cherry Pie Filling, Is It Better To Use Canned Or Frozen Fruit?
By Erin Metz
Choosing the right type of cherries can make or break your pie. Canned cherries offer unbeatable convenience, but it may be worth sacrificing some time to use frozen cherries.
While the canned variety is a time saver, it may have a metallic aftertaste. Most people prefer a fresher cherry filling rather than this highly processed and pre-spiced version.
It's ultimately up to personal preference, but many pie-lovers would agree that it's better to use natural, undoctored fruit, even if it comes from the freezer section.
Frozen cherries make pies more succulent. Simply leave the bag out to thaw until the fruit reaches room temperature before making your filling.
Although fresh cherries might seem like the best choice, they're pricier and require more prep. For many bakers, frozen fruit is the ideal option for baking.
