For Homemade Apple Fritters, An Air Fryer Is Your Best Friend
By Crystal Antonace
Making homemade apple fritters is a tedious process that requires a lot of oil for deep-frying and cleanup. However, you can quickly make a healthier version in your air fryer.
Per Tasting Table developer Alexander Roberts' recipe for air fryer buttermilk apple fritters, combine flour, eggs, brown sugar, and vanilla to make a spiced buttermilk batter.
Fold in two finely diced Granny Smith apples, or use a different apple variety like Honeycrisp or Gala for sweeter fritters, and line your air fryer basket with parchment paper.
For a crispy, fried-like exterior, chill your dough for 10 to 20 minutes before scooping and baking so it's easy to manipulate and less likely to spread during cooking.
Spray the parchment paper with cooking spray and use a measuring cup or cookie scoop to drop mounds of dough into your air fryer. Bake them for up to 9 minutes at 400 degrees F.
Be sure to brush them with oil and flip them halfway through cooking. For the crispiest results, try not to overcrowd your fryer basket to prevent the fritters from steaming.
Adjust the cooking time by a few minutes, depending on the size of your fritters and air fryer. Then, dredge them with cinnamon sugar or a glaze of buttermilk and powdered sugar.
