Fire Cracker Saltines Are A Southern Staple You Need To Try
By Allison Lindsey
If you need an easy-to-make, crowd-pleasing snack that's as humble as it is extravagant, try fire cracker saltines. This Southern staple adds a bold kick to boring crackers.
With roots that tie back to Alabama, fire crackers are saltines marinated in oil and seasonings for a blast of flavor that rivals the bland taste of plain, store-bought crackers.
These spicy saltines are usually seasoned with oil, ranch seasoning, red pepper flakes, and garlic powder, but you can add anything you like to this versatile, customizable snack.
Canola and vegetable oil are often used; olive oil imparts a lush and nutty flavor, while avocado oil provides a more neutral and nutrient-dense flavor.
You can marinate the crackers for 20 minutes or up to a few hours in a lidded container or a resealable plastic bag. Shake or rotate the vessel to achieve an even coating.
You can also bake the crackers after they marinate to develop a pleasant char and give them an ultra-crunchy texture. Store them in a container to keep them fresh for about a week.
