Chick-Fil-A's Plastic Bag Policy Is Drawing Some Serious Heat Online
By Missy Boylan
Whether switching to hand dryers or eliminating single-use plastic cutlery, many restaurants have been joining the movement to help improve eco-friendliness. However, cutting back on plastic can be challenging for businesses that revolve around to-go orders, and one Uber Eats driver ran into a problem when picking up an order for a disabled customer.
Posting a video of the situation on Tik Tok under the username @lifeoftheowl, the UberEats driver requested a plastic bag from the Chick-fil-A employee for a disabled customer since the paper ones don't have handles. Unfortunately, after consulting with someone who appears to be a manager, they turn down this request, citing their store policy regarding "unnecessary waste."
Many comments agreed with the driver, with one user writing, "I'm an amputee and I can't imagine carrying in an order with a drink or any liquid without a plastic bag," and another wrote, "No reasonable accommodation for people with disabilities?!?!" The driver later shared he offered to carry the customer's meal wherever she needed it.
While Chick-fil-A's website and 2021 corporate social responsibility report detail the brand's commitment to sustainability, there's no corporate policy related to plastic bags, but locations may have varying procedures. One Chick-fil-A employee wrote, "They're just following store policy. If the operating manager knows about it, it means that the whole store will be in trouble."
