Canned Vegan Tuna Is A Thing, But What Is It Made Of?
By Allie Ward
The most common brands of cruelty-free and sustainable canned vegan tuna employ a blend of soy and wheat proteins and various seasonings.
Others rely on protein mixes containing additional fortifiers from peas, chickpeas, fava beans, navy beans, and lentils. These plant-based proteins provide a meaty texture.
Some also contain seaweed or algae extract or powder, as the marine extracts contribute a subtle oceanic flavor reminiscent of the sea.
While it's unlikely that plant-based tuna will ever taste exactly the same as the real thing, there are several high-quality, nicely flavored options already on the market.
According to Reddit tuna aficionados, the brand Good Catch is popular. One person commented, "Not really super fishy, but nice texture and not too salty like some of the others."
Loma Linda's Tuno, which comes in a variety of flavors, was also highlighted. One Redditor wrote, "It definitely hit a few of the notes and came close to what I miss."
