Canned Tomato Soup Takes Basic Mac And Cheese To The Next Tier
By Ashlyn Frassinelli
Canned tomato soup and grilled cheese are a match made in heaven, and you can recreate this creamy and flavorful combination in your next batch of baked mac and cheese.
Canned tomato soup packs a condensed, salty, and powerful tomato flavor. Its tanginess and umami flavor pair well with many flavor profiles, particularly rich, fatty foods.
While making the roux for your baked mac and cheese, whisk in a can of condensed tomato soup and adjust the amount of milk as necessary so the dish doesn't turn out too liquidy.
A mixture of cheeses often works best, and a combination of cheddar and a meltable cheese, such as American or mozzarella, offers the best flavor and gooey texture.
To emulate a crispy, toasted grilled cheese sandwich, you can also make a breadcrumb topping for your mac and cheese using panko breadcrumbs, parmesan cheese, and melted butter.
If you prefer stovetop mac and cheese, add a spoonful or two of tomato soup, or as much as you want, directly into the cheese sauce for a similar flavor effect.
