Candied Ginger Is The Powerful Ingredient Swap For Bold Apple Pie
By Jessica Fleming-Montoya
Apple pie is full of warm, cozy spices like cinnamon, allspice, and ginger. Instead of using ground ginger, give your pie a strong, bold flavor by swapping in candied ginger.
Candied ginger, or crystallized ginger, has more of a kick because it's fresh ginger that's been cut into chunks or slices, cooked, and then doused and crystallized in sugar.
You can use a store-bought or a homemade variety and incorporate anywhere from 2 tablespoons to ¼ cup, depending on how spicy you want your apple pie to taste.
Candied ginger typically comes in fairly large chunks. If you add it to your pie like this, random bits will be larger and spicier than the rest of the dessert.
Chop the candied ginger into small pieces or pop it in the food processor, then mix it with the other spices and toss it with the apples to evenly distribute it throughout the pie.
Finish making the pie as usual by adding the filling to your favorite pie crust recipe and baking it. For an even spicier bite, try adding freshly grated ginger, as well.
