Can You Eat Wild Acorns?
By Ariana DiValentino
You should never eat raw wild acorns straight from the tree because they contain a significant amount of tannins, which are toxic to humans in high quantities.
However, acorns can be made edible by leaching the tannins out. Once prepared safely, acorns can offer some health benefits like vitamins A and E.
Start by shelling the acorns — some people find them easier to crack once frozen if they're stubborn. Once shelled, they need to soak.
If you're going to grind them up into acorn flour, soak them in cold water, and if you're going to use them whole or in larger chunks, use boiling water.
The water will turn brown, so drain the acorns and soak them again. Repeat this process until the water runs clear.
In addition to grinding them for flour, you can roast them for 15-20 minutes at 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Some people like to roast, grind, and brew them like coffee beans.
