An Onion Is All You Need To Tenderize Your Steak
By Matthew Wilson
Rather than using a powdered meat tenderizer, all you need for a juicy steak is an onion. Onion acts as a natural tenderizer while also adding a boost of flavor to your meal.
Dice up your onion into small pieces and mix it with some salt. Add the mixture to your steak before cooking, and let the meat sit in the juices for at least 30 minutes to an hour.
The proteolytic enzymes in onions react with the proteins in meat, breaking down the muscle fibers and causing the steak to become more tender as a result.
If you've already got a marinade in mind for your steak, try adding some raw onion to the mix. It will have the same effect as if you were using onion alone.
You should use raw onions as they're the most enzyme-rich, and consider finely dicing, grating, or even pulverizing them. You can even make onion juice to add to your marinades.
