A Lot More Foods Are Jewish In Origin Than You Think

When thinking of Jewish food, you might imagine kugel, rugelach, sufganiyot, hamentashen, latkes, or matzah, but you might not realize that many other foods are Jewish in origin.
A surprisingly Jewish dish is fish and chips. Numerous early historical sources, including Thomas Jefferson, referred to it as "fish fried in the Jewish fashion."
Bagels are a wholly Jewish invention, originating in Poland sometime during the 15th or 16th centuries. However, they're still far more obviously Jewish than other foods.
Fried green tomatoes, long associated with the American South, are actually an invention of northern Jews in the late 19th century.
Foie gras, one of the national dishes of France, was originally created by accident when Middle Eastern Jews were looking to produce more schmaltz (poultry fat).
Brisket is another food for which you can thank the Jewish people. What started as a traditional Jewish holiday dish eventually became the state dish of Texas.
Some foods, including shakshouka and coconut macaroons, weren't directly created by the Jewish people but were spread by Jewish immigrants.
