A Chip Butty Is The Perfect St. Patrick's Day Food For Sandwich Lovers
By Garth Clingingsmith
When we think of classic St. Patrick’s Day foods, dishes like a Reuben sandwich come to mind. However, when you’re celebrating all things Ireland on St. Patrick’s Day this year, there is a different type of sandwich you should consider trying that is more authentically Irish.
A chip butty — “butty” being a term for a sandwich that’s likely an abbreviation of “bread and butter” — is simply a pile of chips (aka fries) laying between plain, soft, white bread smeared with a generous amount of butter. It’s an authentically Irish sandwich associated with the working class, though it crosses every demographic.
While there is some dispute as to whether or not it’s originally Irish, it’s considered authentically Irish because it has always been dependent on Ireland's potato crop. You can mix it up in all kinds of ways, including adding sauces like ketchup or steak sauce (like HP) or adding a third slice of bread to make it club-style.
