By Paula Beaton
Cocktails often come in and out of style, but there are some you don't want to forget, like The Adonis, a sherry-based cocktail light in alcohol with sweet red vermouth and orange bitters. As an excellent aperitif served with olives or nuts, it has a dry finish with delicate flavors and is often topped with a lemon or orange twist.

The gin-based Martinez traditionally uses Old Tom Gin, Punt e Mes sweet vermouth, bitters, and maraschino liqueur to give it its gorgeous, deep red hue. The cocktail is best served in a chilled coupe glass, topped with a black olive, maraschino cherry, or an orange zest twist.

As the Negroni's older, more sophisticated cousin, the Boulevardier uses whiskey instead of gin. This Bourbon-based cocktail also mixes Campari and sweet vermouth and is traditionally served in a rocks glass, over ice, garnished with a twist of orange.

While a traditional whiskey sour uses whiskey, lemon juice, and sugar, the New York Sour uses bourbon and adds a red wine float for a fruity, aromatic flavor. Served in a rocks glass, the red wine is poured slowly over the back of a spoon to float on the drink's surface.

The Pisco Punch uses the South American brandy Pisco as its base, along with sugar, pineapple, lemon juice, orange juice, cloves, and sparkling wine or champagne. The cocktail is traditionally served with a pineapple wedge, and its citrus flavors make it the perfect match for seafood.
