This is Rubbish: Stop Wasting Food

Globally as much as 40 percent of the food produced today is lost, wasted or discarded somewhere along the food production system, according to the U.N. Food and Agricultural Organisation. But This is Rubbish, a charity based in the United Kingdom, is piloting an Edible Education campaign with several free theatre performances throughout London and Oxford to educate – and inspire – eaters around preventing food loss and food waste.

According to This is Rubbish, the United Kingdom generates over 16 million tonnes of food waste every year, costing an estimated US$35 billion. Formed in 2009 by several volunteers, the charity is now a Community Interest Company communicating the preventable waste of food through policy research and community led public events.

Their most recent campaign, the Edible Education program, aims to educate children and adults about food-waste through creative Scratch Feasts where performers will “lead the audience through three courses of games and stories, whilst feeding the audience on nuggets of knowledge and tasty treats made from food that would otherwise be wasted”. The interactive journey will take people through their food supply chain and focus on the 60 percent of food waste that occurs before it even reaches consumers in the supermarket or restaurant.
