“Live a Little” Cocktail

Inspired by country music singer Sturgill Simpson, this cocktail is delightfully unexpected

There’s always one dark horse among the Album of the Year nominees at the Grammys, and for 2017, that horse is Sturgill Simpson’s A Sailor’s Guide to Earth. This spin on a mint julep channels his renegade spirit with a spicy jalapeño syrup and refreshing mint. Like Simpson’s blend of rock, country, and R&B, this cocktail is unexpected.

For the jalapeño syrup:

  • 1 Cup water
  • 1 sugar
  • 1 jalapeño, sliced

For the cocktail:

  • 7 fresh mint leaves
  • 1 Tablespoon jalapeño syrup
  • 2 Ounces Reposado tequila
  • Crushed ice
  • Mint sprig, for garnish

For the jalapeño syrup:

In medium saucepan over medium-high heat, combine sugar and water.

Stir until sugar dissolves.

Add sliced jalapeño, bring to a simmer, reduce heat to low.

Cook for 12 minutes. Remove from heat.

Cover and let steep for 10 minutes.

Strain syrup and cool completely.

Store in an airtight container and keep refrigerated.

For the cocktail:

In a julep tin, combine the mint leaves, jalapeño syrup, and tequila.

Using a bar spoon, crush the mint to release its essence into the liquid.

Fill the glass with crushed ice.

Gently press the spoon into the ice, shaking it to incorporate the tequila-syrup mixture.
