Guests Eagerly Waited In Line For Hours To Try The Popular Halal Fare Over Opening Weekend
Springfield, VA (RestaurantNews.com) The Halal Guys officially opened a Fairfax County location in Springfield on Friday, September 2 to huge crowds of excited fans eager to try their popular chicken-and-rice platters, gyro sandwiches and famous white sauce! By the time their doors opened at 11am, a line had formed around the Springfield Tower Shopping Center of approximately 300 people anxious to nosh on the Halal street food that New Yorkers have enjoyed for nearly 3 decades.
Cindy Perez was the first customer in line and arrived more than 2 hours prior to opening to snag the coveted spot. “I’ve heard a lot about The Halal Guys. I live in Woodbridge and I’m just always excited to see a new restaurant open, especially when it’s good food,” she said.
Over the course of the weekend the line remained that long and reached wait times of four hours, even though once customers get to the counter to order it averages only a few minutes to complete their transaction. Despite the long wait time, the overall consensus was positive and that the brick and mortar location in Springfield had delivered the same flavors as the original food carts in New York. In addition to the thousands who showed up to get their fix of The Halal Guys, Fairfax County Supervisor Jeffrey C. McKay participated in the ribbon cutting and grand opening activities to show his support.
The Halal Guys grew from its humble beginnings as a food cart on the streets of New York City to a global icon known as the largest American halal street food concept in the world. This Manhattan-based landmark was created by three like-minded men from Egypt who came to America in search of a lucrative life. When Mohamed Abouelenein, Ahmed Elsaka and Abdelbaset Elsayed noticed that many cab drivers in New York were looking for a place to buy meals in Manhattan, they created their first food cart and quickly grew into a leading tourist and native New Yorker destination for American Halal fare. In 2013, The Halal Guys were ranked the most popular food truck reviewed on FourSquare and the third most Yelped restaurant in the United States in 2014.
