A Chocolate Company in the Philippines Places Second at the World Drinking Chocolate Competition

Malagos Chocolate sources their cacao beans from Mount Talomo in Davao City.

The International Chocolate Awards is a competition to find the world’s best chocolatiers. This year, the competition offered their very first full World Drinking Chocolate Competition, which was held at the Schokolanden Gourmet Festival in Hannover, Germany, from September 11-13. Among the winners was a small chocolate company based in the Philippines.

Malagos Chocolate is a single-origin chocolate company based in Davao City on the southern island of Mindinao, that sources their products “from tree to bar.” They won a silver prize for their 65% Dark Chocolate drinking chocolate in the Drinks with Dark Chocolate category, and were the only company from East Asia to take home an award.

Malagos’ cacao beans are produced at the foothills of Mount Talomo in Davao City. Last year, they won a bronze award for their Premium 100% Unsweetened Chocolate in the Best Unflavored Drinking Chocolate category.

“We are very proud of this achievement,” Rex Puentespina, Malagos chocolate maker, told GMA Network. “Winning two international awards in the span of only one year proves that Philippine-made chocolates can be elevated to world-class standards.”
