Patti LaBelle Launches Two New Walmart Cakes

Following the viral success of Patti LaBelle's Sweet Potato Pie, Walmart introduces two new products to be sold under LaBelle's good life brand. The launch is part of Walmart's ongoing efforts to revamp its bakery department, according to BuzzFeed.

Both cakes have been in the works since last March, when LaBelle and Walmart started working together. The vanilla pound cake is dense, buttery, and topped with a generous coat of vanilla icing. It is available in stores and retails for $6.44. The caramel cake features three layers of yellow cake filled with caramel buttercream, all topped with caramel icing. It will be available on January 18 for $13.94.

For the first run of the new cakes, Walmart tells BuzzFeed that it will use 50,000 pounds of vanilla icing for the pound cake and 54,000 pounds of cake batter for the caramel cake.

Though Walmart hopes the cakes spark another viral hit, Kinna Thomas, senior buyer for cakes and pies, says, "At the end of the day, our focus is on quality... If it does go viral, we'll know that we've also connected with them in a different sort of way." It seems that Walmart has high expectations for the two new launches, as more Patti LaBelle desserts are already in the works.
